A few weeks back I posted a video of an Audi TT auto-piloting the Thunder Hills race-track. As if that wasn’t enough of a move to strip us humans of the enjoyment of actually driving ourselves around, now German tools Bosch have gone and made it so that while our cars are doing the driving for us, they aren’t going to be able to bump into each other, or ever worse, any pedestrians. Say it with me: “This is horseshit!” The first system they’ve come up with is admittedly very clever. An automatic swerve and slow system which triggers when a car detects a pedestrian in the road. This is good because not all pedestrians deserve to be knocked over. Only people on bicycles on Sunday morning and Metro cops. Functionality coming soon? The ability to warn the car behind you that your car is going to automatically brake and… Read More »
Most tripped out Mazda RX7 on earth CUSTOM CAR
At only 19 years old, Corbin Goodwin has started his own custom car garage. Admittedly his premises is the garage next to his parents house and he has only one, rather ugly car to his name, but he’s on his way. This is his 297kw, rear-wheel-drive, Mazda RX-7. What you might be thinking is “deathtrap”, and you’d be right. But this is also one of the most enthusiastic, quick and fun customs I’ve ever seen. Well done mate!
Retro-fit your iPhone with the ‘gizmon iCa’ case NEW GADGET
Nog a bleedin’ iPhone camera accesory piece of plastic yada yada blah blah… Ok, this one does look nice and you won’t look like every other lemming who got the iPhone 5. The ‘gizmon iCa’ polycarbonate case turns your iPhone in to a rangefinder camera and give you a working shutter button on the top. And just in case this isn’t the first toy you’ve bought to make your iPhone look better than everyone elses, it comes with a second interchangeable section that allows for the fitting of any of the accessory lenses.
Evonik wind-explorer crosses Australia, connected to a kite EPIC FEAT
Take nothing away from the Aussies, they make full use of the baron, empty land between Perth and Sydney. Evonik Industries have created a lightweight, electric vehicle that runs on lithium-ion batteries and has recently crossed the 5000km continent, using only 15 dollars’ worth of electricity. The lithium-ion batteries on-board are recharged —whenever the wind conditions allow it—by a mobile wind turbine. The result? An open top convertible rip-off of a 1920’s racer that weighs only 200kgs and uses less electricity than Eskom making an effort. The batteries produce enough energy to travel 280-360 kilometres a day, and can even travel by kite alone. Granted there is much to be said about the inconvenience of having to strap yourself to a kite for 4 hours at a time, but that’s green road-tripping for you. Also, bring a few extra friends along if you ever try this, you will definitely lose… Read More »

Ultra-Standard…it’s the Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook GADGET REVIEW
REVIEW BY NIR APTER (PLEASE GIVE THIS NEW, YOUNG REVIEWER SOME FEEDBACK IN THE COMMENTS) Acer is one of the first companies to have jumped on the Ultrabook bandwagon to release their rendition conforming to Intel’s specifications, and although not completely on par with the design and build quality of its competitors, or say, Apple, and only slightly cheaper, Acer have taken a radical shift in the right direction with their Aspire range. Here’s the breakdown. The Acer Aspire S3 is actually a copy of the MacBook Air, only slightly larger, but maybe, just maybe we can ignore that for the time being. Perhaps you’ve experienced the Acer Aspires of old. I always like to imagine a stack of VHS tapes stuck together with wood glue and bound with string. No, not some high-tech spider web string made of steel, just normal every day string. It’s reminiscent of uneven plastic… Read More »
Hyundai’s brilliant ‘What is your brilliant moment with Hyundai?’ ad
Cute new ad from Hyundai! Takes me back to the days when your stomach used to drop when your mom drove too fast over a hill on the way back from school. Good times! Sponsored Post
The Golf 7 arrives in SA NEW CAR
God! More talked about than a Malema press conference, this thing. But I am glad that it’s finally arrived and available in SA. Granted they haven’t done much with the look of it. But as I always say “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”! If you must know, the proportions of the new Golf have actually completely changed. The front wheels have moved 43 millimetres further forward and the front overhang is therefore shorter, while the bonnet looks longer. More confident and “up for it” than ever before, but no one is going to mistake it for a Hyundai. Aside from sticking with what works, changing anything radical on a South African icon that’s more important to us than whining about potholes and braaing on a Sunday, and VW could have had a real threat of riots on their hands. In the engine bay, there are a few new… Read More »
iPhone and Android users try to figure out Blackberry 10
You’ll soon get your hands on one of the new Blackberry devices, and if it’s the Z10, touchscreen one, you’re going to want to know what you’re doing. This video shows that it isn’t as easy as you perhaps think. But in fairness, every new phone takes a couple of minutes to work out and get used to.
Motorola HC-1 wearable computer NEW GADGET
Picking where Google left off teasing us is Motorola with their pretty intelligent and actually working wearable computer, the HC-1. Granted it’s not nearly as good looking as the Google Glass concept Google showed off, and their model is a bit plain-faced, but this actually works. And besides, Motorola is after a whole different market to the consumer one: industry, military, aerospace, aviation, utilities and other similar commercial applications in the field It runs on a Windows interface, but live tiles are a bit trendy for the working class, so it’s Windows CE 6.0 Professional with a custom speech recognition engine. Other note-worthy tech on board? an energy saving Dual-Core processor, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity and a 9-axis head-tracking accelerometer. Get it: R50 000 – R65 000
