Here’s an idea that American electrical engineer Scott Brusaw is working on to hopefully replace our dependence on fossil fuels for energy: solar powered roads. Clearly someone told Scott he could do anything with his life, and he believed them.
The Solar Roadway is a series of structurally-engineered solar panels that can be driven upon and the idea is to replace all asphalt roads, parking lots, and driveways with Solar Road Panels that collect energy to be used by our homes and businesses. Roads are after all mainly made of oil anyway.
The excess energy will be stored in or alongside the roadway creating it. In the end, Scott wants to create an intelligent, self-healing, decentralized (secure) power grid.
The Solar Roadway will also have a knock on effect in to other aspects of socio-economic life because the photovoltaics are capable of inputting the electricity directly in to the power grid. This means no longer relying on centralized power stations and long distances for electricity to travel.
