Velocipedes. Known back in the good old days (and I mean, like, really old days) as a bike with an enlarged front wheel to give you a better transmission ratio. It’s early so I’ll explain: more power per pedal.
Incidentally, these bikes were also known for making modern man look like a complete tonsil as he attempted to ride one, eventually gracing the pages of YouTube as a #FAIL video.
Still, this hasn’t stopped German design studio Ding3000 teaming up with plastic practitioners BASF to create a modern take on the 19th century bi-wheelers which now incorporates a collection of BASF developed materials and an electric drive motor.
Only the brake, axles and motor are still made of metal in fact with 24 different polymer applications, such as bearing-less all-plastic pedals made of ‘ultrason’ and puncture-proof tires made of ‘infinergy’ — a closed cell expanded thermoplastic polyurethane.
My congratulations go out to these guys for creating a bicycle with more plastic in it than Bruce Jenner, and also to anyone who completes the 94.7 Cycle Challenge on the top of one of these.
