The Western Cape Government’s Safely Home initiative has hit a new low (or high depending on your perspective). They’re now threatening to confiscate the phone of any driver caught talking or texting on their phone without using a handsfree. This is ridiculous because you can’t even text on a handsfree gadget. I mean, come on!
The provincial road safety campaign active in the Western Cape is hoping to cut road deaths in half by 2014. Noble especially when considering that more than a million collisions a year involves a cellphone of some kind.
They’ll be issuing a R5 000 fine and confiscating infringing persons phones for 24 hours. But I don’t think they’ve really thought this one through because my research tells me that 95% of people who talk or text while driving are 18-25 year old white girls.
Don’t they realize that without their cellphones these girls aren’t going to be able to organize cocktail hour with their friends at News Café or meet up with their Varsity bitches to get their hair did at the salon? This sort of thing will have implications on all manner of industry in South Africa.
Whatevs guys, whatevs!
